Wedding Music: Live Band or Disc Jockey

Before looking at the pros and cons, I can honestly say that my position is discriminative as I am the owner of a Professional Mobile Disc Jockey Company. However I do promote a few local bands and musical groups but understand their place within the entertainment industry.

Bands are great; live music, live performers and lots of energy with a good band. The cost is however three to four times more than a Professional Disc Jockey. As price is not the most important factor and your satisfaction is, allow me to bring a few more facts to your attention.

Professional Disc Jockeys don’t take breaks and the music is continuous where bands normally play 45 minute to 1 hour sets then take a break. This leaves the event using a band with no music during intermissions, an energy and sometimes party killer.

A second point of view is that a Professional Disc Jockey carries a much wider variety of music than any band could ever play, making sure that the dozens of musical tastes are satisfied. Specific songs can be played at a moments notice as requests are taken.

Through my personal experience, I have seen many bands entertaining and volume control has been a common problem. A Professional Disc Jockey can easily control the volume at a single moment’s notice where a bands volume is normally a “work in progress” situation.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not taking anything away from the talent of a live band. I have heard many bands over the years and only a few would I ever recommend. With this said, I have always believed that a band has their place and a Professional Disc Jockey has theirs. Ultimately it is your decision.

Another question you may want to ask yourself is how many people will dance to a live band as opposed to that of the music played by a Professional Disc Jockey? If you have 200 people in a room, not everyone will be happy with the band, no matter how good they are. A Professional Disc Jockey can however easily appease the variety of musical tastes within a room throughout the night. From R & B to Country to Pop to Dance to Rock N Roll to Latin to Reggae to Light Sounds (dinner music) to Oldies to Themed Music and the list goes on. A Professional Disc Jockey can play it all.

The extras; oh yes, look at the extras. You can obtain total interactivity with a Professional Disc Jockey including Prize Giveaways, Games, Contests, Emcee, choreographed evening of music, and so much more. It is difficult for any live band to do any of these things and play at the same time. Professional Disc Jockeys can include quality light shows at reasonable prices and provide special effects to create the perfect atmosphere.

I hope that you don’t construe this article as a band bashing memento. In fact, it is only an educational tool that I created so that the public seeking entertainment can make an educated decision. I love bands and find that the entertainment they provide is great, taking into account the “quality” of the band and the venue. No venue is the same as everyone has different tastes and opinions.

Research and take a poll as to what your party guests would like to have as their entertainment and be sure to highlight the facts above when addressing them. Keep in mind that over 80% of your guests will remember the entertainment and not what they ate for dinner or the service at the venue or the cash bar you put in place. They won’t even remember what you were wearing that night. But I assure you that they will always remember the entertainment; great or terrible.

Entertainment makes the party memorable. Choosing the perfect entertainment is a difficult task. I hope that this article will help you make the perfect choice for your next great event.
