Picking the Best Cabin for Your Cabin Wedding
By Rev. Jodie S.  Champoux
www.cabinweddings.com

A popular alternative to the traditional church wedding has become a cabin wedding.
The setting can be in the woods, on a mountainside, or snuggled by a stream. We have been performing wedding services in cabins for over ten years, and have learned what works and what doesn’t.

When you are planning a cabin wedding you are at the mercy of the rental company to tell you honestly what you need to know to have a stress-free wedding day.
Let’s face it; the whole idea of a cabin wedding is based on stress-free, so this is important. If possible, use a rental company that you have done business with before, one that you know will tell you the honest truth about the cabin you are renting. Try to work with a reservation person who has actually been to the cabin you want to reserve, if at all possible.

Have a list of questions prepared and write down the answers. For instance, if you are going to have guests to your wedding you will need to know about access (are there a lot of stairs to the cabin?), parking (how many parking places are there, how level is the parking), and size of the cabin (how big is the deck, how big is the living room?). If you are planning a wedding during the winter you will want to know what happens if it snows? Is the cabin accessible? Is there an alternate facility available if there is snow?

We have been to cabins that have such steep driveways with such limited access that only one car was able to go up and park. This left us hiking up a steep hill with our equipment. Not good. We have also been to weddings where they have tried to squeeze 25 people onto a small deck with us trying to videotape and take pictures. Again, not good.
Knowing if the cabin you are renting will be adequate in terms of space and parking will alleviate a lot of  problems.

Sometimes people will want a great mountain view as the backdrop for their wedding service. The problem is that often this means a steep drive up a winding mountain road. That’s fine for some people, but be considerate of your guests.
If you have a family member who is terrified of these types of roads be sure to tell them beforehand so they can make the choice to brave the terrain.

Just remember, by a little advance planning, asking good questions (and insisting on knowledgeable answers), you can have the cabin wedding of your dreams.

Rev. Jodie S. Champoux has performed thousands of wedding services for couples in the
Great Smoky Mountain Region. She and her husband, Rev. Bill Champoux own and operate Smoky Mountain Cabin Weddings, an in-cabin wedding service.
